Sherwood Forest

Being a reading specialist, I have taught various levels of middle school reading abilities. One of my classes consisted of teaching remedial reading to 8th graders who were reading on a 3rd grade level.

They hated
picture books and so wanted to "read" chapter books. These kids could read the words. They just could not comprehend WHAT they had read.

In the community where I was teaching, there was a putt putt golf course called Sherwood Forest One of the books we read together was about Robin Hood and naturally Sherwood Forest was mentioned. There was even a picture which included a huge redwood tree.

One of my students was infuriated. She got up from her desk, with book in hand and pointed to the tree. She loudly stated that there was no such tree at Sherwood Forest because she had just been there over the weekend and didn't see it!!
